My Road Trip

Update (4/18/2006 -)

34 states and 2 countries later, I’m finished traveling for a while. I’m staying near my grandparents, helping them get settled. The move has been really tough on them and their health is only so-so. I guess you could say they’re in great shape for the shape they’re in. I feel really fortunate that I am able to spend time with them. They do keep telling me I should go to Alaska…. I’ll be back on the road before you know it!
In the meantime, check out the archives to see the pictures!

Part of the reason why..

I don't want this to sound like a shameless plug for Jimmy Buffett's book ("A Pirate Looks at Fifty"), but I have to say the book did play a part in my defection from the rat race. If you get a chance to read it, perhaps you'll understand what I mean. Personally, every time I read it I get restless. It makes me want to get out and see the world, meet new people and live a little.

Quoted in the book is a fantastic poem by Don Blanding called "The Double Life".

How very simple life would be
If only there were two of me
A Restless Me to drift and roam
A Quiet Me to stay at home.
A Searching One to find his fill
Of varied skies and newfound thrill
While sane and homely things are done
By the domestic Other One.

And that's just where the trouble lies;
There is a Restless Me that cries
for chancy risks and changing scene,
For arctic blue and tropic green,
For lusty fun and raising Hell
But shackled to that Restless Me
My Other Self rebelliously
Resists the frantic urge to move.

It seeks the old familiar groove
That habits make. It finds content
With hearth and home--dear prisonment,
With candlelight and well-loved books
And treasured loot in dusty nooks,

With puttering and garden things
And dreaming while a cricket sings
And all the while the Restless One
Insists on more exciting fun,
It wants to go with every tide,
No matter where...just for the ride.
Like yowling cats the two selves brawl
Until I have no peace at all.

One eye turns to the forward track,
The other eye looks sadly back.
I'm getting wall-eyed from the strain,
(It's tough to have an idle brain)
But Ones says "Stay" and One says "Go"
And Ones says "Yes," and One says "no,"
And One Self wants a home and wife
And One Self craves the drifter's life.

The Restless Fellow always wins
I wish my folks had made me twins.

I'm going to indulge the Restless Me for a while :o)

The Story behind the site

It all happened so fast. I completely changed my life over a 30 day period of time. I can't honestly say this was all planned in advance. It wasn't that I had a grand goal and everything happened just as I planned it. It was more that everything just sort of fell into place and suddenly I'm embarking on this great adventure that I hadn't even realized I wanted so badly.
I sold my house on August 5th, 2004. It was a 30 day escrow.. no problems.. it was almost scary how quick and easy it happened (thanks for being such a great Real Estate agent Diane! - Rick, thanks for doing such a wonderful job on those repairs!).
I gave notice at work, my last day would be September 3rd (I miss you all!). September 3rd was also the day I had to be out of my house.. Busy week!
I purchased The Coach from a great family in Woodland, CA. Thank you Frank for helping hook us up and making sure we were set up safely.
The weeks after September 3rd were spent buying all the neat stuff you can buy for a coach and a trip like I planned on taking. Camping World sells so much cool stuff that I didn't even realize I needed! I love that place! WalMart comes in a very close second with their huge selection of organizers and camper gear.
I have to send out a special "Thank you" to my sister Michelle, my brother-in-law Craig and my Mom. Michelle was a huge help in putting the plan into motion. She found my first and second house for me :o) I couldn't do any of this without the help she has always given freely. Craig, thanks for helping me move, I couldn't have done it without you, you're my favorite brother-in-law! Mom, thanks for letting me store all my stuff out at your place, for giving me a place to park The Coach and watching Max.
A big shout-out to my extended family at work. I miss you, I love you, I'll be sending you postcards :o)

Disclaimer

I won't be spending a bunch of time making the site pretty. So no laughing at the shoddy web site design. I'm going to spend as much time as I can out taking pictures and very little time working on the site. Like Marlon always says "Come outside... The graphics are great out here!!"

Feedback & Suggestions

If you have any feedback regarding the site content I'd love to hear it. Even better, if you have suggestions about places I should/could visit I'd really love to hear them. I plan on covering as much of the US as I can, so no suggestion is out of my way. It may take me a while to get there but I'll make it eventually. You can email me at mbrooks "at" myroadtrip.org Thanks!
