5/16/2005 - We drove 367 miles today – from Shawnee, OK to Hays, KS so that we can be in position for tomorrows chase. There were numerous silly string and slingshot fights in parking lots across two states…. Gotta love it. We stopped in Hays, KS at around 5:30PM and then headed over to Applebee’s for dinner. After dinner John gave Ray, Nathan, Mark, Jay, Patti and me a ride over to the local bowling alley where we bowled a few frames and had a beer. Good times. We’re heading out at 10AM tomorrow…. Here we go!
5/17/2005 - We drove 512 miles today… from Hays, KS to Lincoln, NE. We stopped in Kearney and then chased a storm cell out across the countryside. We had dinner at Whiskey Creek and then headed to Lincoln… arriving at the hotel around 12:30AM.
5/18/2005 - We drove all over the place today. Thank God we have some good laughs in the car. There were some minor skirmishes in the parking lots when we stopped for gas, food or WI-FI. We ended our day in Enid, OK.
5/19/2005 - We drove back to Norman, OK today. The weather is depressingly nice, so we don’t have any storms to chase. John and I executed a successful silly string attack on Charles. Good times.
5/20/2005 - We went to the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman. They are very security conscious so don’t allow tours except on a pre-arranged schedule. We were able to buy some T-shirts. It’s a very cool place… I’d love to go back for one of the tours. A little later we met up and went to watch the latest Star Wars episode. It was surprisingly good. I wasn’t expecting much, but it was great. There were some really funny parts. I’m not entirely sure they were supposed to be funny, but we got a kick out of them. Dinner at the Golden Corral (mmmmmmm…. The trough) and then headed back to the hotel.
5/21/2005 - (529 miles) After brunch with the group I started my trip back to New Braunfels. Saying goodbye was sad. I’m going to miss those folks!! Ack! Ack. ACK!!
I’m taking the route that I’ll be pulling my trailer on… this way I can scope out the roads and the gas stations ahead of time. It’s a good thing too, these are some desolate backcountry roads. I’m constantly amazed at how friendly folks out here are. They wave as I pass them on the road, people out mowing their yards wave as I drive past… They are so nice!
I arrived in Big Spring, TX around 11PM.
5/22/2005 - (334 miles) I arrived at camp around 5:15PM. Pat was still at the office and gave me the code so I could get my trailer out of storage. The refrigerator hadn’t worked the whole time I was gone… the stink is heinous. I had to throw everything out, scrub down the fridge with a toxic mixture of bleach and Mr. Clean, soak all the shelving in the bathtub filled with bleach and Mr. Clean… and I can still smell it. Ugh. I’ve never smelled anything quite like it. I hope to never smell anything like it again…. I really hope the smell will go away soon.
